Superintendent Juneau is Sworn in at the Montana Capitol 2009

Sworn in on January 5, 2009 as the first American Indian woman in a statewide office.

Thank you for the honor and opportunity to serve as your Superintendent of Public Instruction.  At the close of my first year in office, I am proud of what has been accomplished so far, and I am ready for the challenges ahead.

I visited many schools and communities across the state this year and appreciated hearing from hundreds of Montana students, teachers, parents, and community members. Our students are succeeding, our ability to serve schools in innovative ways is advancing, and the nation is taking notice.

Student Success

This year, tobacco use among Montana teens declined.  Student ACT scores are up from last year showing our students are better prepared than ever to enter college.  New math scores show Montana fourth and eighth-graders continue to test above the national average and the number of students who struggle with read ing is down.

Setting an Example for the Nation

This year, Montana's leadership in key Indian Education policies was recognized. I was honored as the 2009 Educator of the Year by the National Indian Education Association.  I also serve on the executive board of the nation's largest non-profit education accrediting organization (National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education) and the education workforce committee of my national group, the Council of Chief State School Officers.

Serving Schools and Communities

With the infusion of federal stimulus money and state Early Reading First grants, schools will be able to hire more preschool teachers and help more low-income and special-needs students learn to read at an early age.  More schools than ever before are able to provide fresh fruits and vegetables to students thanks to grants from the Office of Public Instruction.  We're also doing our part to promote local agriculture and advance agriculture education in Montana. The Office of Public Instruction recently provided funds to a non-profit agency to provide 5,400 books and early childhood literacy training to communities across Montana.  Our agency is doing everything possible to ensure students are successful in school regardless of their economic status, geographical location, or heritage.

I look forward to keeping you up to date on our progress over the coming year.  You can also find out more about what’s been happening at my campaign website www.JuneauforKids.com  I will continue to listen to your ideas about how we can better educate our young people. Together, we can help to develop exceptional leaders who will lead Montana into a very bright future.

Thank you for all of your continued support,

Denise Juneau
